The idea first emerged in 2006 when two Iranian renowned biotechnology researchers obtained favorable results from initial and preliminary experiments and were able to obtain a patent certificate from Industrial Property Registration Organization.
Considering the possibility of producing experimental products and the urgent need of patients with diabetic foot ulcers, leishmaniosis and burns, a trial was carried out with a significant efficiency of over 95% in treating these patients.
The Biopolymer Project’s main goal is to produce various types of biopolymer wound dressings such as gels, films, powder and patches with a unique effect without the use chemical and pharmaceutical substances. These dressings are composed of completely harmless and natural polymers which are produced with certain percentages based on formula, physical shape and the type of application and then are sterilized by gamma rays. With alterations in the formulation and preparation method, these dressings are very helpful for patients who suffer from infectious ulcers (such as diabetic ulcers, leishmaniosis, burns…) and are producible and usable in forms of film, patch and gel.
Composite biopolymer film is a transparent adhesive dressing with a layer of natural and synthetic polymers with or without a back layer that is impermeable to liquids and bacteria and at contact with the ulcer, it absorbs the wound exudates so it can take the form of a gel and create a suitable wet environment for the wound. This gel-like layer prevents the dressing from sticking to the wound.
These products were invented and formulated based on the biopolymer science (biocompatible polymers) and natural and innocuous raw materials of chitin and chitosan, which are abundant in nature and can be found in marine shellfish (shrimp, crabs) and mushrooms. They are easily absorbed by the body without any complications or side effects. The formula and proprietary production method of these products were introduced by Iranian scientists to the world and have been approved by official authorities. Obtaining a patent in Iran and getting a US Patent approval is a testament to that claim. These products are classified in the category of medical equipment (non-pharmaceutical).
